Updates on our sweet Michael

Quick Update

on October 22, 2013

Yes, it is safe to assume that no news is good news. All in all, Michael has been doing pretty darn well the last few months (knock on wood). No trips to the doctor, no sickness and no major scares. He does have an occasional bad day where he just doesn’t feel good or his heart rate is a little high. Sometimes he is a bit more “gunky” or lethargic but that all just comes with the territory.

Right now, however (meaning the last couple of days), he has been running a low grade fever averaging between 99.0 and 99.8 His secretions have been a little thicker and we can tell he just doesn’t feel good. I think it is just a little cold, nothing serious (fingers crossed). We are giving him Ibuprofen and Tylenol around the clock, we have his humidifier going at night and we are suctioning like there’s not tomorrow. So far his chest sounds perfectly clear so we’ll just keep doing what we’re doing and hope it doesn’t turn into anything more serious.

On a side note, we are slowly working our way towards bolus feeds with Michael. You may remember us trying this last year but it was unsuccessful as he kept throwing up. So since last summer he’s been on a continuous rate (65 ml/hr. to be exact) of food for 12 hours a day. Starting a little over a month ago, we started increasing his rate and we are now up to 100 ml/hr which means his tummy is stretching and he’s handling a lot more food at once. As soon as we get him to 125 ml/hr and see that he’s handling it okay, we’ll switch to a true bolus schedule. No more being hooked up to that darn pump all day long! He’ll get 6 meals a day just like you and I do. We’ll simply pour his food into a 60 ml syringe and let gravity guide it into his tummy. Man, that’ll be a nice change.

With the weather changing and cold and flu season upon us, I’ve got to get us all in to get our flu shots! We cannot have ANY sickness in this house so that’s next on my agenda.

Thanks for checking in. I’m posting a picture of Michael that I took today so you can see how big he is! He’s 30 lbs. and 3 feet, 3 in. tall! Image

My heart breaks & my eyes swell up everytime I read one of your blogs. This one, with the sweet picture you posted of Michael, makes me smile and cry at the same time. He is so precious and all of this is so unfair for a child to go through, there must be a special place in heaven for families like yours.

Wow Katie Michael looks so big. You have on my mind since I saw this post earlier. How is he doing now? Good I hope.
I hope the feeding regime keeps going well. I know how tying it is on continuos feeds. Best of luck and please stand there and take a bow- ye are doing a great job. Looking after a MLD kiddo is a constant challenge (and a privilege). Hugs to Handsome Michael.
